Liz Unger was born in Brooklyn in 1944 and divided her time growing up between Baltimore, Maryland, and Coney Island. She spent every summer and every holiday staying with her aunt and grandmother, who lived on West 30th Street. Another aunt, uncle, and cousins lived on West 28th. Unger shares memories of favorite stores in the neighborhood such as Hank's Luncheonette, Bernstein's Bakery, and Rosenberg's Deli. She describes Lillian Candy Company, her aunt and uncle's candy factory on Mermaid Avenue, where she helped wrap giant lollipops as a child.
